Color Texture Pattern

Color, texture and pattern are important elements of interior design. They are important because they occur in the world around us and are part of our everyday life. Sometimes they are placed by the human hand.

Woven chairs placed at  round tables in a neat row create a pattern of various colors and textures.
A group of handle bags in Betsey Johnson's signature pink make a glorious and colorful pattern.
Repeated elements in an interior can interest and elegance. The row of paned glass doors and light fixtures make a strong statement in this setting.  photo from French Essence
Nature provides us with boundless amounts of color, texture and pattern.
You could design the interiors of your home from the color palette found in these onions and artichokes. There is also the right balance of texture and pattern. Have you found your perfect mix of color, texture and pattern?

Update Your Home With Texture

Adding texture is a great way to update your interiors. Fabrics with texture can be used as pillows or wall hangings to bring dimension, warmth and interest to your home. Texture is created on fabrics by varying weaves or fibers and by using embroidery or embellishments.

These beautiful pillows are from Tessera and are great examples of how to add texture.
The multiple levels of texture adds interest to this pillow.
Anthropologie always has a selection of pillows with wonderful textures.
I love this stack of embroidered silk pillows from Hammer & Hand .
Hammer & Hand also has finished fabrics that have been constructed from antique saris. The individual pieces are sewn together and include fragments that have been embroidered and embellished. These are gorgeous.
Using an embellished fabric as a wall hanging is a wonderful alternative to using only hard surfaces to decorate your walls.
These details show how the upcycled embellished sari fragments have been sewn together to create a beautiful wall hanging. If you have questions about adding texture to your home leave a comment and I will get back to you.

Texture

Texture plays an important role in interior design. Varying textures adds interest to a room or setting.

The varying textures of this room create interest and comfort. The bare room of plaster walls and terrazzo floors was a bit cold. Designing the room was a joy. Starting at the floor, I used a custom designed hand knotted area rug. It is made of wool with accents of silk. A great start for adding texture. The soft, warm rug on the cool terrazzo floor is a wonderful combination. On top of the rug is a coffee table of metal and glass. On either side of the table is a sofa covered in a lush velvet and a bench covered in a thick chenille.

The trim on the windows is painted a glossy black. The sensuous silk fabric of the window treatment plays well against the glass and glossy black trim.

Balance is at work here. The soft textures along with the hard surfaces create a room that is beautiful and comfortable.

Mixing the materials used for the hard surfaces added to the textures of the kitchen. The wood cabinets on the perimeter of the room have a granite counter. The island has a counter made of wood. The tiles in the back splash area add another type of texture. The hood over the cook top was painted to create a layered look. The fabric and style of the window treatments bring a soft texture to the design of the kitchen.

The mix of textures works with the mix of colors in the overall design scheme of the room.

The clean lined sofa and chair are covered in smooth linen. The contemporary end table has a glossy crushed shell finish. To keep the room from being too sleek and cold the floor is covered in a plush carpet. The window treatments are made from a soft silken velvet. These layers of texture balance and enhance the design of the room.
